She's LIke the Wind

It's been 4 months and I almost forgot I had these blogs, so I'm back with a little Patrick Swayze! Dirty Dancing rocks, and I love this song! If this MTV video is actually from the 80's, it adds a little extra retroness to the post. If not, it's still Patrick Swayze, right?

Nickelodeon Silver Ball

This here, my friends, is the Nickelodeon silver ball ident used from 1981-1984 (which I never knew existed--I just assumed the 'splat' was there from the start).

While were on the subject, did anyone else know that they took Nickelodeon Studios out of Universal Studios in Orlando? Even the Slime Machine's gone! I have a lot of good childhood memories from Nick Studios. Eh, I'll get over it I guess. They took out the Back to the Future ride, too. It's disappointing.

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town

I love the movie, Mr. Deeds, with Adam Sandler, but I never knew it was a remake of an old one until I saw this at the library and rented it. I like the new one better--it's funnier.

Pete and Pete Theme Song

Finally! I got this to work. Here's the Pete and Pete intro and lyrics. There's a dispute over the line, "Don't you talk back." Some people say it's supposed to be "Does your dog bite?" Listen and decide for yourself.

Hey Smilin' strange
You're lookin' happily deranged
Can you settle to shoot me?
Or have you picked your target yet?
Hey Sandy (ai ai ai ai)
Don't you talk back (ai ai ai)
Hey Sandy

Nick Rewind

I can't believe Nick Rewind is on hiatus! I hope it doesn't get cancelled! I just bought Season 1 of "The Adventures of Pete & Pete" today, and I'm trying to find "Clarissa Explains it All."

My computer is being obstinate and won't let me post the Pete & Pete intro. I'll try again tomorrow, but for now, here's a picture of it. Big Pete reminds me of Breck a little bit.

Yours, Mine, and Ours (1968)

Okay, this is the only thing I could find on the original "Yours, Mine, and Ours." There are enough clips of the 2005 remake on youtube.com to recreate the movie, but nothing on the original. I spent a few minutes mourning our close-minded generation, and then I moved on.

Freaky Friday 1976

This is the trailer for the original Freaky Friday from 1976. I'm on an old-movies-that-have-been-remade kick right now, so expect more trailers/clips of other old movies--whatever I can find.

Sabrina (the movie, not the TV show)

This is about the movie Sabrina from 1954, starring Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, and William Holden. I'll try my best to explain it.

It's about this girl named Sabrina Fairchild, the daughter of the chauffeur of a really rich family. The family has 2 sons, one who lives for work, and the other who hasn't worked a day in his life. She has been in love with the slacker son all her life, but he thinks of her as a little kid. She goes to cooking school in Paris to try to get over him, which she thinks she does, and she comes home more grown-up and sophisticated.

David, the slacker son, doesn't recognize her and falls for her like she wished he would. This causes a problem for the business-man son, who has arranged a marriage for his brother, and has a business deal riding on his relationship with the bride's family. He tries to break them up, but ends up falling for Sabrina instead.

Here's a video clip of Sabrina getting home from Paris and David not recognizing her. Ignore the subtitles--it was the best clip I could find. The only other good one was Sabrina's attempted suicide, but it's long and kind of depressing.

One Saturday Morning

Okay, forget the cutesy introduction stuff, and let's cut to the chase. Ever heard of Disney's One Saturday Morning? Not really retro, but it fits better on here than my other blog. It's too reminiscent to warrant a spot on "Juliana Talks Incoherently."

For those out of the loop who need clarification, One Saturday Morning was a kid's television block that ran for 5 hours every Saturday morning (duh) on ABC.

These are some of the shows from One Saturday Morning: "Pepper Ann," "The Weekenders, "Teacher's Pet," "Recess," "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh," Disney's version of "Doug," and others (those are just the ones I remember). I've added some pictures to distract you from the writing (because we all know I can write enough about nothing to start my own chrestomathy)--hehe.

This is Pepper Ann--http://www.bcdb.com/

This is The Weekenders--shows.savedisneyshows.org/weekenders/

Okay, so this TV block lasted from 1997 to 2002, where it was replaced with ABC Kids, which just plays reruns of shows from Disney Channel. That would mean that the quality of Saturday morning TV would be inversely related to how many coffee breaks the writers at Disney decide to take. We all know how they like their coffee breaks.

Of course One Saturday Morning was not a television phenomenon to shape a generation. The 1980's was supposedly the best decade in Saturday morning cartoons, but I wasn't alive for that. Mehe.

Here's the One Saturday Morning intro...now, this I don't remember. I do remember the cheeky way they said "One Saturday Morning" though. That in itself was enough to entice me for a while.

Another "Kids Inc." Theme Song

Okay, well here's the one from 1991 with Jennifer Love Hewitt. For some reason, these kids are a little creepy to me. Eh...I don't know why. Enjoy!

Kids Incorporated

I almost regret not being around to see this show...

Okay, well enjoy the "Kids Inc." theme from 1984. It had a previous theme song from it's premiere year in 1983, but I like this one better. Fergie is actually in this, but you probably knew that. Jennifer Love Hewitt was in the show a little later. I might post that one, too, in case you care one way or the other.

You're definitely a 90's kid when...

Woah. I just realized how long my last post is. I'll make this one shorter.

You know you're a 90's kid because...

1. You thought Brain from Pinky and the Brain would actually take over the world.
2. You can't resist finishing this sentence--Iiiiiin West philidelphia, born and raised...and once you start, you have to finish the song.
3. You got excited when it was Oregon Trail day in computer class.
4. You know that "WHOA!" comes from Joey on "Blossom" and "How Rude!" comes from Stephanie on "Full House."
5. You were scared by "Are You Afraid of the Dark?"
6. You yearned to be part of "The Baby-Sitters Club." (I wanted to start my own.)
7.You wore those stick-on earrings, not only on your ears, but on the corners of your eyes.
8. You remember reading "Goosebumps" with a flashlight.
9. Spice Girls. Need I say more?

I really miss the 90's. Grr...I got the "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" theme stuck in my head now.

I got these from http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1002559

You know you're from the 80's when...

Courtesy of http://www.bored.com/childhoodsite/index.htm, I've compiled a list of my favorite "ways to know you're from the 80's." See how many apply to you (if any). A lot of these apply to me, and I wasn't even alive in the 80's.

1. Four Square was the playground game.
2. You've ever said, "I pity the fool..."
3. At one point during you're teen years, you walked with a noticeable tilt to one side due to the number of plastic rings on that arm.
4.Schoolhouse Rock played a huge part in how you actually learned the English language.
5. The phrase "Where's the Beef?" still doubles you over with laughter.
6. U2 is too "popular" and "mainstream" for you now.
7. You actually know who Rick Springfield is. (I only know from 13 Going on 30)
8. You actually spent countless hours perfecting the care-bear stare.
You can name at least half the memebers of the Brat Pack. (I can name them all! Not that that's anything to be proud of.)
9. You once called 867-5309
10. You've seen at least 10 episodes of Fraggle Rock.
11. You know all the words to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" but it didn't hold any meaning to you until about the 3rd verse.
12. You know the profound meaning to "wax on, wax off."
13. You know the words to at least one Schoolhouse Rock song.
14. You owned a T-shirt that says, "I shot J.R," or you know someone who had one.

And to finish...
You spent your 20's and 30's obesessing over how much better things were "back then."

Stay tuned for the sequel--"You know you're from the 90's when..."

Tropical Chill Pepsi, Anyone?

Okay, before introducing this link, I have to introduce a new quirk of mine...I have a strange fascination with old sodas. No, not "past it's expiration date" old, I mean retro/novelty old. Actually, I have a fascination with soda in general. Once, I was shopping with my mom for soda for a big party we were having, and there was a sale: 5 cases for $10! That's $.17 a can! I got to pick the 5 and I don't know if I've ever spent that long contemplating beverages in my life. Yeah, I know I'm pathetic, but I'm proud of it.

Okay, that was a long story about nothing, and I apologize for wasting your time. Speaking of wasting your time, here's an article from X-entertainment.com about some old sodas that didn't last. It's a really great article if you share my obsession, or if you just have some time to kill before American Idol. Alright, well, click here.

Quisp--that's fun to say!

This is my favorite old cereal. I wonder what happened to it.

Drive-in Intermission

1960s drive-in intermission entertainment from your own home! I love this one because it has a "save standard time" promo. In case you were wondering, I think this video is from 1968-1970 era because of the GMRX thing, which only existed in those years.

Two Words...Giant Oreos

I wish these were still around...what a great way to harbor my unhealthy obsession with oreos. I think they got rid of them because people thought they were too big. No such thing! This commercial is so cool...just like the Pac Man Cereal, I think it's a combination of the dancing, the catchy song, the cool 80's clothes, and products that could practically sell themselves. (As you can see, I also have an unhealthy obsession with old commercials. You probably knew that already.)

I was not alive in 1983, so I could very easily have no idea what I'm talking about. With that said, here is a picture of the 1983 Apple Lisa computer.

Now, has anybody seen the movie Weird Science? (Yes, another John Hughes movie, thank you very much.) If you haven't, it's about these two unpopular high school boys who decide to create "the perfect woman" using their computer and some science. (As you can probably tell, it's not exactly realistic, but it's a pretty good movie, none the less.) They name their virtual girl Lisa.

One the trivia web site I listed in my Breakfast Club post (http://www.riverblue.com/hughes/trivia1.html), it says that the character, Lisa, got her name because the script for the movie was written on an Apple Lisa computer (the movie itself came out in 1985, I believe). Interesting? Maybe not for you, but I thought so. I love old computers. It would be pretty cool to have one of those, in my opinion.

Who remembers Arthur??

I realize that Arthur isn't technically "retro," but it's my blog and I can do whatever I want with it! Mwahahahaha!! Well, it's retro to me...

Basically, Arthur taught me to read. I had a subscription to the Arthur fan club and had every book written about this lovable aardvark. The two above were my favorites, from 1993 and 1994.

Notice the drastic change in illustrations in the above picture. This was one of the earlier Arthur books, copyrighted in 1976. As far as I can tell, Francine was Arthur's only friend in this book that remained all the way through the series. in this book, Arthur actually has a giraffe and a stork for friends. And there was no Buster! Sad...

The TV show on PBS based on the books became my favorite after-kindergarten show later on. I also had some of the Arthur stories on cassette tape and followed along in the book. Okay, well thanks for reminiscing with me. There's more reminiscing to come. I actually think the 1976 big nose Arthur is pretty retro...

The Breakfast Club

Just the fact that I know what The Breakfast Club is probably labels me as a weird, retro-80's chick right from the get-go, but The Breakfast Club is cool, so there. Whenever I mention it around an adult, they gaze into space as if they're pondering something, and always say, "Wow, I haven't seen that movie in ages! Do have any idea how old those people must be?" Almost as old as my parents, which is kind of scary.

If you've seen the movie, here's a link to some interesting facts about TBC: http://www.riverblue.com/hughes/trivia2.html

If you haven't seen it, watch the trailer above. It's my favorite movie of all time, if that means anything at all to you. Okay, well, I'm too tired to think of a good conclusion, so enjoy!

Pacman Cereal

I love everything about this commercial. It's an early 80's commercial advertising Pacman cereal, which looks a lot like Lucky Charms...to me, anyway. One of the coolest things about it is it's advertising something that doesn't even exist anymore. I love the clothes...I always say that I'm going to walk around some crowded area dressed like that and see how people react. 1980s fashion seemed so much more fun that fashion today. The song and dance is awesome...it must have been fun to have been a kid in the 80s.

The Rabbit Eats His Trix!!

Hey, people. Thanks for taking the time to actually read my second blog! This one's about all things retro, and right now I'm basking in my triumph of finally posting this video.

Every little kid in America with a shred of compassion has sympathized with the Trix rabbit. He's been the mascot of a cereal for the past 4o something years, but he never really gets to eat it! His plans to eat the Trix cereal are always foiled by some selfish kids who snatch it out of his hands and rationalize with, "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids." He's eaten a few bites of the cereal, apparently on several occasions, but I have never seen it happen in my lifetime. I found one here for anyone wanting to see for themselves!

In 1976, General Mills launched a petition to see whether the rabbit should get to eat a whole bowl of Trix. They got a consensus of 99% in favor if the rabbit, and he got finally got a whole bowl! Yay! Take that, selfish kids! Someone should teach them to share...
